448 precise local-dimming zones

This 98-inch version features 448 precise local-dimming zones—the highest dimming-zone count within the A400M range. Individual sections of the Mini LED backlight can be controlled independently, helping the television display bright highlights alongside deeper blacks and clearer shadow detail.

TCL’s all-domain halo-control technology manages the entire path from light generation to the finished image. High-efficiency Mini LEDs, condensed micro-lens optics, Micro-OD construction, advanced light-control algorithms and an HVA panel work together to reduce the halo or blooming sometimes visible around bright objects against dark backgrounds.

The result is improved contrast during challenging scenes such as stars against a night sky, subtitles over dark images, city lights and brightly illuminated objects within otherwise dim environments.

Up to 1,000-nit HDR brightness

The TCL 98A400M reaches peak HDR brightness of up to 1,000 nits. This size-specific figure allows sunlight, reflections, flames, explosions and other HDR highlights to appear with greater intensity and impact.

The increased brightness is particularly useful on a very large screen, helping the picture retain clarity and colour in well-lit living spaces. Local-dimming control also helps preserve detail in darker areas rather than simply raising the brightness of the entire image.

Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG support provide broad compatibility with HDR films, streaming programmes, television broadcasts and games. Dolby Vision IQ can adapt compatible content according to the ambient lighting within the room.

Rich QLED colour

TCL’s Quantum Dot technology reproduces more than one billion colour shades and provides up to 93% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space. This gives films, sport, animation and nature programmes richer colour, smoother gradients and more natural-looking skin tones.

The high-transmittance colour filter helps maintain strong light output while improving colour purity. TCL’s bionic colour optimisation also analyses individual scenes, enhancing colour without making faces and skin tones appear unnaturally saturated.

TSR AiPQ picture processing

The TSR AiPQ Processor analyses picture clarity, contrast, colour and motion at pixel level. Its processing helps optimise different types of content rather than applying the same adjustments to every programme or input.

Lower-resolution broadcasts, compressed streaming content and older films are intelligently processed to appear cleaner and more detailed when enlarged across the 98-inch 4K panel. Motion processing also helps improve clarity during fast-moving sport, action films and games.

The TCL 98A400M supports gaming at up to 144Hz in 4K resolution with compatible consoles, gaming PCs, cables and source material. The high native refresh rate helps fast movement appear smoother and clearer while reducing visible blur during racing, shooting, sports and action games.

Variable Refresh Rate synchronises the display with the frame rate produced by compatible gaming equipment, helping reduce screen tearing and stutter. Auto Low Latency Mode can automatically switch the television into a more responsive gaming mode when a supported console is detected.

AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, HDMI 2.1 gaming support, TCL Game Master and the dedicated Game Bar provide additional tools for adjusting gaming settings. Superwide Gameview and an on-screen aiming aid are also available for compatible games and inputs.

288Hz Game Accelerator at 1080p

The advertised 288Hz Game Accelerator operates at 1920 × 1080 Full HD resolution. It does not provide a 288Hz refresh rate when gaming in 4K.

Compatible PC gamers can choose the lower Full HD resolution to access refresh rates of up to 288Hz, while those prioritising maximum picture detail can play in 4K at up to 144Hz.

Google TV entertainment

Google TV brings supported streaming services, applications, live television and connected devices together through one straightforward home screen. Recommendations are organised around your viewing habits and subscriptions, helping you find films and programmes without searching through each application separately.

Individual profiles provide personalised recommendations for different members of the household, while a dedicated children’s profile offers parental controls and age-appropriate viewing options.

Built-in casting and Apple AirPlay 2 allow compatible photos, music and video to be shared from phones, tablets and computers. Voice search can also be used to find entertainment and control compatible smart-home devices, subject to account, language and regional availability.

Art Gallery and Ambient Mode

When regular television viewing is finished, the 98A400M can use its huge screen to display artwork, personal photographs, clocks and relaxing ambient scenes.

TCL’s Art Gallery includes a curated selection of classic paintings, impressionist works, digital art, contemporary images and abstract designs. Personal photographs can also be displayed using compatible devices and applications, allowing the television to operate as an oversized digital gallery.

The ultra-slim design and minimal bezel help artwork feel more integrated into the room, particularly when the television is installed using a suitable slim wall bracket.

ONKYO sound with Dolby Atmos

The integrated ONKYO 2.0-channel audio system uses two 10-watt speakers to provide clear dialogue and balanced everyday sound. Side-firing speaker design helps widen the presentation and align the sound more closely with the large on-screen image.

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X processing add a greater sense of space to compatible films, programmes and games. A compatible soundbar or home-cinema system can also be connected through HDMI eARC or the optical digital audio output.

TCL’s Tutti Choral feature can allow the television speakers and selected compatible TCL soundbars to work together, creating a broader and more integrated soundstage.

Slim 44.5mm flat-back design

Despite its enormous 98-inch panel, the screen cabinet measures approximately 44.5mm deep. The flat unibody back and minimal bezel provide a clean appearance from the front and side, helping the television appear less bulky when installed in a large room.

A suitable ultra-slim wall mount is required to achieve the closest possible fit against the wall. The final wall gap will depend on the mounting hardware, cable routing and the condition of the installation surface.

TCL’s star-ring cooling system helps manage heat during longer viewing sessions. Adequate ventilation should still be maintained around the television, particularly when it is installed within furniture or a recessed media wall.

Plan carefully for delivery and installation

The television measures approximately 2182mm wide and weighs around 52.7kg without its stand. The boxed television is approximately 2384mm wide, so doors, hallways, stairways and turning spaces should be checked before delivery.

Wall mounting requires a suitable 600 × 400mm VESA bracket that is rated for the television’s size and weight. The wall structure, fixings and installation method must also be appropriate for a screen of this scale.
