A complete Sony flagship home cinema system

The Sony HTA8KIT.CEK brings together three of Sony’s premium BRAVIA Theatre products in one carefully matched system. At the front of the room, the BRAVIA Theatre Trio uses separate left, centre and right speaker cabinets rather than attempting to reproduce the entire front soundstage from a single soundbar.

The dedicated centre speaker anchors voices and on-screen action to the television, while the separate left and right speakers create greater physical separation, scale and width. The included Rear 9 speakers then add genuine sound from behind the seating position, while the Sub 9 handles the demanding low-frequency effects found in modern films, games and concert recordings.

360 Spatial Sound Mapping

Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology analyses the position of the physical speakers and uses advanced signal processing to generate additional phantom speakers around the room. The BRAVIA Theatre Trio can create up to 24 virtual speaker positions, extending effects beyond the physical location of each cabinet.

Rather than limiting the best experience to one narrow listening position, the wider sound field helps several people enjoy convincing surround sound across a sofa or larger seating area. The addition of the Rear 9 speakers strengthens the sensation of movement behind the listener and allows the system to create a more complete three-dimensional sound field.

Clear dialogue from a dedicated centre speaker

The centre channel uses a two-way design with two woofers and a dedicated tweeter. This gives speech, vocals and on-screen effects their own physical speaker rather than relying entirely on virtual processing.

Sony’s X-Balanced Speaker Units maximise the usable diaphragm area while limiting unwanted driver movement. This helps the system maintain clarity and sound pressure during demanding scenes, with voices remaining intelligible even when the soundtrack becomes busy.

When connected to a compatible Sony BRAVIA television, Voice Zoom 3 can use AI-based processing to raise or reduce the level of human voices without simply increasing the overall volume.

BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 wireless speakers

The included SA-RS9 Rear 9 speakers add 180W of manufacturer-rated amplification across the rear pair. Each speaker contains a front-facing woofer and tweeter alongside a large 80mm up-firing speaker.

The up-firing drivers reflect sound from the ceiling, helping reproduce height information from Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks. This allows effects such as aircraft, weather, environmental ambience and objects moving above the listener to occupy a more convincing vertical position.

Swivelling wall-mount brackets are included, giving the speakers greater placement flexibility where floor space is limited. They may also be positioned on suitable furniture or speaker stands.

BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 with dual opposing drivers

The SA-SW9 Sub 9 is Sony’s premium wireless BRAVIA Theatre subwoofer. It uses two opposing 200mm aluminium drivers, each powered by 300W of amplification for a combined manufacturer-rated output of 600W.

Positioning the drivers opposite one another helps cancel unwanted mechanical vibration within the cabinet. The result is bass designed to remain deep and forceful without becoming loose or excessively distorted. This is particularly valuable during film soundtracks, where the subwoofer must reproduce both sudden impacts and quieter atmospheric low-frequency information.

The Sub 9 connects wirelessly to the Theatre Trio, although it still requires a nearby mains power socket. The HT-A8 also supports a second matching Sub 9 should an even larger room require more balanced bass coverage.

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced

The complete system supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based soundtracks, allowing compatible content to place effects around and above the viewer rather than restricting them to conventional horizontal channels.

IMAX Enhanced certification is also supported when the Theatre Trio is used with compatible rear speakers and a subwoofer, as supplied in this package. Compatible IMAX Enhanced content can therefore be reproduced using the complete speaker configuration rather than a virtualised front-only presentation.

Sound Field Optimization for your room

Speaker placement does not need to be perfectly symmetrical. Sony’s Sound Field Optimization measures the acoustic characteristics of the room along with the position, distance, phase and delay of the speakers.

An included USB Type-C calibration microphone connects to a compatible smartphone during setup. The BRAVIA Connect app then guides the user through the measurement process and optimises the system around the room and chosen seating position.

This is especially useful in real living rooms where doors, furniture, fireplaces or open-plan layouts can prevent speakers from being positioned at identical distances.

HDMI 2.1 connectivity for movies and gaming

The Theatre Trio provides one HDMI input and one HDMI eARC/ARC output. Its HDMI connection supports modern video features including HDR, Dolby Vision, VRR, ALLM and Source-Based Tone Mapping, while Sony states that picture quality can be preserved up to 8K HDR with compatible sources and displays.

PlayStation 5 users can enjoy immersive overhead audio alongside compatible gaming features such as Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode when the system is connected to a supported Sony BRAVIA TV.

Music streaming and wireless playback

In addition to home cinema use, the system supports Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay and Bluetooth playback. Bluetooth 6.0 compatibility includes SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs, while High-Resolution Audio support provides greater flexibility for higher-quality music sources.

Sony’s DSEE Ultimate processing uses Edge-AI to restore detail that may have been lost from compressed music files. Stereo recordings can also be upmixed across the complete system, while Multi Stereo can reproduce the same programme through the front and rear speakers for more evenly distributed room-filling sound.

Simple control through BRAVIA Connect

The Sony BRAVIA Connect app guides users through installation, speaker pairing, room calibration and everyday control. Volume, sound-field settings and listening modes can be adjusted directly from a compatible smartphone.

Owners of compatible Sony BRAVIA televisions can also access key audio controls through the television’s Quick Settings menu and use the regular BRAVIA remote for everyday operation.
